A Netflix show created by a comedian fired from Saturday Night Live for using racial slurs has been labelled ‘the funniest show ever’ by viewers.
Released on the streaming platform last week, Tires is an American comedy series co-created by and starring Shane Gillis, who was infamously fired from SNL five days after being hired five years ago.
His workplace comedy follows Will (Steve Gerben), who inherits his family’s struggling auto-repair chain, Valley Forge Tires, in Pennsylvania.
Doing his best to revitalise the business, he faces persistent harassment from his obnoxious cousin, Shane (Gillis), who frequently undermines Will at every possible chance.
The six-episode series has already been renewed for a second season, with Gillis also set to have a stand-up special recorded and released on the platform next year.
The sitcom first began in 2019 as a pilot on the comedian’s YouTube channel before being picked up by Netflix.
Since its release, viewers have been sharing their thoughts on social media, with one fan saying it was ‘the funniest show I have ever seen’.
‘Tires on Netflix is 10/10,’ Logan posted on X.
‘Can’t believe how good the show Tires is on Netflix,’ user Emanon shared.
‘Tires on Netflix is hilarious. Definitely worth a watch if you’re looking for a new comedy,’ Marco added.
Many said they went in with ‘low expectations’ but were pleasantly surprised.
‘They knocked it out of the park. I want season 2,’ one user begged.
The series is currently sitting in the Top 10 most-watched shows in the UK on the streaming service.
In 2019 Gillis was famously fired from the long-running American comedy sketch series SNL after comments he made on a podcast the year before emerged.
In 2018 a since-removed episode of Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast, Gillis and co-host Matt McCusker jokingly discussed Chinatown in mock East Asian accents and used an ethnic slur for Chinese people.
In other clips, they ranked comedians by race, gender and sexual orientation, which included the use of gay slurs.
On the day the comments re-emerged, Gillis said he was a ‘comedian who pushes boundaries’ but that he was ‘happy to apologise to anyone who’s actually offended’ by anything he said.
Four days later, a spokesperson for Lorne Michaels, a co-creator of the show, announced that Gillis language was ‘offensive, hurtful, and unacceptable’ and that he’d been removed from the cast.
After being fired, Gillis went on to release two stand-up comedy specials, one on YouTube in 2020, while his second special, titled Beautiful Dogs, was released on Netflix in September last year.
In February this year, he was invited back to host SNL for an episode, saying in his monologue that he ‘probably shouldn’t be up here, honestly’.
Since 2021, Gillis has made a series of appearances on Joe Rogan’s podcast The Joe Rogan Experience, and last year had a recurring role on the series Bupkis, starring Pete Davidson.
