Warning: spoilers ahead for The Acolyte episodes one and two.
The Acolyte fans have been left in a state of utter shock after finding out what happens to Carrie-Anne Moss in the opening moments of the Star Wars series.
Before the release of the new series, which is set 100 years before the events of the prequel film trilogy, one thing that people were particularly excited about was the fact that 90s film legend Carrie-Anne – who soared to fame as Trinity in The Matrix – was in the cast.
However, some viewers are devastated after her character in The Acolyte, a Jedi Master called Indara, was seemingly killed off by Amandla Sternberg’s Mae minutes into episode one.
The premiere begins with Mae hunting Indara down in a bar, before the pair of them engage in a fast-paced fight, with Indara showing off her incredible Force-fu prowess, and Mae demonstrating her knife-wielding skills.
While Indara is able to hold Mae off with ease, she then has to make a decision between saving a civilian from one of the assailant’s knives or herself… choosing the former.
Indara collapses dead on the ground as Mae walks away, having successfully managed to exact her revenge for reasons viewers are yet to find out.
Considering just how legendary Carrie-Anne is as a cinematic icon, and the fact that fans were expecting to watch her as a Jedi for the eight episodes of The Acolyte, many were disappointed to say the least.
‘Wait so that’s it for Carrie Anne Moss???? What is going on???’ @OneTrueKayla wrote on X in disbelief.
‘Killing off Carrie-Anne Moss before the show’s title is definitely a choice. Her doing Jedi stuff was like 99% of any reason I was interested in #TheAcolyte,’ @MMonteiro90 added.
‘Wait, so you get Carrie Anne Moss to play a Jedi Knight and she’s gone before the title card on the first episode?’ @AssassinoEzio2 penned in astonishment.
‘Holy s**t. They marketed this entire show around Carrie-Anne Moss and they killed her off in the first 5 minutes lol. Disney really can’t help themselves,’ another user called @JacenTraviss stated.
Despite the widespread upset and anger about Indara’s demise, there are some fans who think there could be more to her fate than a swift death in episode one.
One very compelling theory is that Indara could actually be the villain of the whole series, the mysterious master who Mae serves and is carrying out her deadly missions for.
‘Prediction: Carrie-Anne Moss’ character is definitely the villain in #theacolyte 👀,’ @RjMartinez_84 tweeted.
In a lengthy post, @SicklyTheNinJa detailed how the clue to the Jedi Master’s true identity could lie in her name.
‘I feel the villain is Carrie Anne Moss’s character “Indara”, which means “Lord” in several languages. Lord is also a synonym for “master” which is what the villain goes by. “The Master”,’ they wrote.
They speculated that Indara ‘possibly faked her own assassination as an alibi’, could be the reason for the deaths of Mae and Osha’s family members, and might be murdering other Jedi Masters ‘to cover her tracks further’.
If this turns out to be true… bring on more Carrie-Anne in The Acolyte!
The Acolyte is available to stream on Disney Plus, with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
